There are few chains out there as iconic as the gold plated belcher. A truly timeless classic, we dive into what the style is about, its origins and how to rep it in our blog below.
What is a Belcher Chain?
The belcher is one of the classic chains on the scene, an easily recognised and iconic piece.
Belcher chains (also called rolos) are usually made from a D-shaped wire and cut into oval-shaped links that are wider than they are thick. When pulled, the links alternate 180 degrees, giving the chain a classic, timeless look and feel.
The Origins of the Belcher Chain
The belcher chain originated right here in the UK in the 19th century - it’s a timeless design that is still current today.
What Does Belcher Mean?
There are many stories around the belcher name, most of them linked to 19th-century bare-knuckle boxer James Belcher.
The common belief is that it was named directly after Belcher. However, another theory is that the name actually relates to the belcher scarves popularised by the fighter. His scarves were tied with a ring that is similar to the links on belcher chains.
How to Style a Belcher Chain
A classic belcher chain appears thicker than most other styles, making it perfect as a standalone necklace or bracelet. You could also pair a belcher with thinner chains if you want to group up.
Belcher chains are also ideal for wearing pendants. If you want your pendant to stand out, consider a thinner belcher to make it appear larger.
Beyond that, the belcher chain is ideal for styling however you want. Whether you prefer making noise or adding a touch of class, the belcher is a fantastic and versatile chain.
Choosing a Belcher Chain
There are many different styles of belcher on the market, so finding the perfect chain for you is crucial.
